SAUGUS —  Police Chief Domenic J. DiMella reports that the Saugus Police Department is welcoming a new officer from the academy as it gets ready to say goodbye to a longtime fixture in town.

Officer Derek Ryan recently graduated from the Police Academy program offered by the MBTA Transit Police. Officer Ryan successfully completed the challenging, 28-week program. He will now enter a field training program with a veteran Saugus Police Officer before starting a one-year probationary period.

Officer Ryan is 32 and is married and a father of one.

“I am proud to welcome Officer Ryan to the Saugus Police Department,” Chief DiMella said. “Becoming a full-time police officer is a difficult and competitive process, I have very high hopes and expectations.”

The department is also announcing the retirement of Sergeant Alan Erickson. Sergeant Erickson served the department and community for 33 years. He served as Department Prosecutor for 17 years and was liaison to Essex County District Attorney’s Office. He has received numerous Letters of Commendation for his acts of courage, dedication, and professionalism. Sergeant Erickson was also actively involved with Saugus Police Athletic League (PAL).

“Sergeant Erickson has been a constant presence, a source of leadership, and motivating force in the Saugus Police Department for more than three decades, and I wish him nothing but the best during his well-deserved retirement,” Chief DiMella said. “We will miss him.”

The department extends an invitation to local media who wish to attend Sergeant Erickson’s farewell gathering on Friday Feb. 27, 2015 at the Saugus Police Station at 9 a.m. in the second floor conference room.
