Carlisle Police Urge Victims of Sexual Assault to Come Forward

CARLISLE — Police Chief John C. Fisher and the Carlisle Police Department would like to take this opportunity to encourage victims of crimes to come forward, saying it may not be too late to notify police about situations which may have occurred, even though years may have passed since someone was victimized.

Chief Fisher says for certain crimes, it may take time before a victim has the emotional strength to approach law enforcement authorities.

“Sometimes people are victimized when they are young, such as in the case of sexual assaults, and it takes years to develop the courage to talk about what happened,” Chief Fisher said. “I want to reassure victims of abuse and other crimes that our department is welcoming to anyone bringing forward a complaint and will support and help any victims with referrals to counseling and in accessing the criminal justice system if that is a path the victims are interested in pursuing.”

Chief Fisher said the department was recently approached by several victims of sexual assault and heard a heartbreaking story of betrayal regarding what occurred.  Although the alleged suspect in the incident is now deceased, Chief Fisher said the incident being reported has helped those victims in their healing process.

Chief  Fisher emphasizes that: “It is never too late to bring information to a police department.”  He says many unsolved crimes are solved years later when someone can talk about what he or she saw or what was experienced. “As adults, we sometimes have an awareness about things that have happened which confused us at an earlier age.”

The Carlisle Police Department keeps phone calls anonymous if the caller wishes. Information regarding resources can be made available without a detailed disclosure.  The department may be reached by calling, 978-369-1155.
