NEWBURYPORT – City Marshal Thomas H. Howard, on behalf of Mayor Donna Holaday, the Newburyport Police Department and the people of Newburyport and Plum Island would like to thank the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for sending six heavy trucks to the City to assist with snow removal efforts.

Eastern New England has been battered by a series of historic winter storms, with a second blizzard and fourth major storm forecast for this weekend.

The five dump trucks and one front-end loader arrived Friday and have been working 12-hour shifts to help clear snow from Plum Island roadways. They were originally scheduled to stay for two days, but they will be here at least one additional day. They made good headway on clearing up major roads on the island, and they have even helped clear some of the side streets ahead of this weekend’s potential blizzard.

“We have been able to make good progress responding to these major winter storms, and we would not have been able to clear as much snow as we have without the amazing help of our friends in Pennsylvania,” Marshal Howard said. “On behalf of everyone in our community, I offer my sincere thank you to PennDOT and the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”

Massachusetts and Eastern New England have received help from several other states, including New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Marshal Howard also offers his gratitude to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, which helped direct the trucks to Newburyport.
