“I am truly sad to learn of the death of Mayor Thomas M. Menino. Mayor Menino was the embodiment of leadership for a generation of Bostonians, and indeed Americans. Like many young New Englanders, I can barely remember Boston before Mayor Menino, and it is difficult to imagine the city without his presence.
“I only worked for Mayor Menino for two years, at the end of his fifth historic term in office, but the lessons I learned from watching and listening to him are permanently etched in my mind.
“For me, Thursday, April 18, 2013 will stand out forever. That was the day, three days after the Boston Marathon attack, that Mayor Menino stood up. In pain, less than a week after surgery for a broken bone in his leg, he stood up from his wheelchair at the prayer service with President Obama, and the Mayor spoke to his city.
“That’s Mayor Menino. Nobody cared as much as Mayor Menino cared, and it inspired us in our work every day. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to Mayor Menino’s wonderful family, wife, children, and grandchildren during this difficult time.”
