Stoneham Police Arrest Revere Man for Allegedly Attempting to Rob Convenience Store

STONEHAM — Police Chief James McIntyre announces that the Stoneham Police Department early Sunday morning arrested a man for allegedly taking part in a botched robbery of a convenience store when the clerk refused to cooperate with the robbers and engaged them in a struggle.

BRETT R. OSGOOD, AGE 25, of REVERE was arrested after an investigation and charged with:

• Attempt to Commit a Crime (Armed Robbery)
• Malicious or Wanton Destruction of Property
• Assault with a Dangerous Weapon
• Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon
• Witness Intimidation

According to the Police Department, Osgood allegedly went into the “C-Store” convenience store on Main Street late Saturday evening and purchased a $2 scratch ticket. A short time later, OSGOOD allegedly returned with a man in his 40s who attempted to cash in a scratch ticket. While the clerk had the register open, one of the men drew a firearm and ordered the clerk not to close the cash register. The clerk refused and told the men that he would not give them any money. The second suspect allegedly hit the clerk several times in the face, but the clerk broke away and tried to call police on his cell phone. OSGOOD then allegedly tried to open a lottery ticket dispenser and the cash register while the clerk was engaged with the other suspect, but he could not get the register drawer open.

Both suspects tried to open the drawer, but were unsuccessful. The clerk then told police that he threw chili powder in the robbers’ faces. The robbers fled, but the clerk followed them and made note of their license plate before calling police.

The license plate was registered to OSGOOD’S residence in Revere. The clerk made a positive identification of OSGOOD as one of his assailants, and he was arrested. The clerk refused medical treatment.

Police are still seeking the second suspect, and the case remains under investigation.

“The clerk in this situation showed incredible bravery, but we would, of course, never recommend that someone try to fight off a robber who is pointing a gun at you,” Chief McIntyre said. “We are pleased that no one was seriously hurt.”

OSGOOD will be arraigned in Woburn District Court later today.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
