The following is an update from the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.
Tropical Storm Arthur forms off the East Coast of Florida… Expected to brush the Southeastern New England Coast this Weekend…
At 2 p.m. the center of Tropical Storm Arthur was located at 27.9 N 79.4 W or approximately 80 miles east southeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida. T.S. Arthur is moving to the Northwest at 5 MPH and has maximum sustained winds of 40 MPH.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is forecasting that Arthur will move to the North Northeast during the next two days and become a Category I hurricane by 8:00 AM Friday morning. At that time Arthur is forecast to be located near the outer banks of North Carolina with maximum sustained winds of 80 MPH.
Arthur is then forecast to turn to the Northeast on Friday, accelerate, and move southeast of Cape Cod by early Saturday morning. The closest approach of Arthur is expected to occur at 2:00 AM Saturday morning when Arthur is forecast to be located approximately 180 miles southeast of Connecticut.
At this time the impact from Arthur in Connecticut is expected to be minor. Northeast winds Friday night may gust to 25 MPH at times along the Southeast Coast. Tides are expected to run within 2 feet of normal and rainfall is expected to total 1 – 3 inches which may cause some local urban flooding.
The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection will continue to monitor T.S. Arthur and will issue another update at 8:30 AM Wednesday morning.
