Burlington Police and Fire Respond to Downed Plane in Wooded Area Near Burlington Mall

Two Occupants Not Seriously Injured

BURLINGTON — Burlington Police and Fire today responded to a reported plane crash in a wooded area off of Middlesex Turnpike.

Calls came in shortly after 1:30 p.m. On arrival, firefighters found a single-engine plane, with a deployed emergency parachute, in a marshy area of the woods, about 1/4 mile from the roadway.

The plane had two occupants, a female pilot and a male passenger, were not seriously injured. They were able to remove themselves from the airplane and were helped out of the woods by firefighters.

They were taken to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center by the Bedford Fire Department for evaluation. Their names are not being released.

During the response, the Billerica Fire Department covered the Burlington stations, and the Bedford and Hanscom Fire Department responded to assist. The Woburn and Bedford Police Departments responded to the scene to assist. Armstrong Ambulance also responded.

“I am grateful for the fast response from our officers and neighboring communities. Fortunately, the two occupants of the plane survived without serious injury,” Police Chief Michael Kent said.

The plane came down close to a Burlington town water treatment facility. Public works crews quickly shut it down as soon as they saw the plane coming down. There has been no impact to the Burlington public water supply.

The incident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, with the assistance of Burlington Police and Fire.
