Saugus Police Investigating Fatal Head-On Motor Vehicle Crash
3-Year-Old Child Killed, Unlicensed Driver of Other Vehicle Arrested
SAUGUS — The Saugus Police Department responded late Monday night to Walnut Street for a head-on motor vehicle crash that fatally wounded a 3-year-old child.
The department received a 911 call at 10:37 p.m. for the area of Walnut Street between Elm and Central streets. On arrival, Saugus police found two vehicles, badly damaged.
The first vehicle, a gray 2005 Volvo XC90, was driven by a 43-year-old man from Lynn, who refused medical treatment at the scene. The only other occupant of the vehicle, a 3-year-old boy, had sustained serious injuries. The child was taken by American Ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The second vehicle, a white 1998 Ford Explorer, was driven by DANIEL LEAL ORTEGA, AGE 40, of Lynn. An investigation by Saugus Police revealed that ORTEGA had an outstanding warrant from 2005 for operating without a driver’s license in Danvers. He was treated and released from a Boston hospital and then arrested by Saugus Police.
ORTEGA has been charged with operating without a license from last night’s crash. He still faces the same charge out of Danvers.
The incident remains under investigation by Saugus Police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section.
