Joseph O’Connor Takes Office as Concord Chief of Police
Transit Police Veteran Brings Exemplary Resume, Record of Service
The Concord Police Department has a new chief this week! Former MBTA Transit Police Superintendent-in-Chief Joseph O’Connor has been appointed Concord’s new Chief of Police.
Chief O’Connor started his new job on Monday, and has been getting up to speed on the town and department.
“Chief O’Connor brings a rich experience and proud record of service to Concord, with strengths in management and modern policing tactics,” said Christopher Whelan, Concord’s Town Manager. “He will be a fine addition to our town, and we are very pleased to have him as our new chief of police.”
O’Connor served the Transit Police with distinction from 1990-2014 and previously served as a police officer for the towns of Dennis and Winchester during his career. He rose through the ranks of the Transit Police, from patrolman to Superindent-in-Chief, a position he has held since 2012.
He holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Boston University, and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Curry College. He is also a 2010 graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy. As Superindent-in-Chief, O’Connor had had a wide range of responsibilities on the 273-member Transit Police Department, including community policing, anti-terrorism, management, and maintaining strong ties with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. He also helped organize multi-agency policing efforts for major annual events, such as First Night Boston, The Boston Marathon, and the annual July 4th Celebration.
Chief William G. Chase will assist Chief O’Connor with the transition.
“I could not be more pleased with the appointment of Chief O’Connor,” Chief Chase said. “He will be an excellent chief for Concord, and I look forward to working with him as he takes the reins.”
