Wakefield Police Investigate Pedestrian Accident this Morning

Woman Injured, Pushed Young Children to Safety

Wakefield Police Chief Rick Smith announces that police are investigating a motor vehicle accident involving pedestrians that occurred this morning.

At 8:51 a.m., Wakefield Police received multiple 911 calls for a report a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian at the intersection of North Avenue & Prospect Street. A preliminary investigation shows that a paving truck made an illegal right from North Avenue onto Prospect Street. In doing so, the truck struck a metal light pole, knocking it off its base.

The pole fell into the path of a woman, approximately 40 years old, who was pushing two young children in a jogging stroller. The woman pushed the children to safety, but was herself struck by the falling pole.

The woman sustained non-life threatening injuries, including cuts. The children , a 5-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl, and the woman were transported to an area hospital.

The driver will likely be cited for making the illegal turn. Additional charges may be forthcoming.

The incident is under investigation by Wakefield Police and the Massachusetts State Police Truck Team.

MBTA Train service was suspended briefly. Traffic was also detoured in the area during rush hour. All roads are now open.
