New York woman who bought guns for firefighters’ killer convicted

A New York State woman who purchased guns for a convicted felon who used them to murder two volunteer firefighters was convicted Tuesday of falsifying records.

According to FireRescue1.com, a jury in Rochester convicted 25-year-old Dawn Nguyen because she lied on gun purchase forms, saying she was buying the guns for herself. She is still subject to federal weapons charges.

Nguyen bought the guns for her neighbor, William Spengler Jr., who was not allowed to own guns as a felon. (He spent 17 years in prison for murdering his grandmother with a hammer, by the way.) Spengler set fire to his home on Dec. 24, 2012 and then shot at the responding firefighters, killing firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka and wounding Joseph Hofstetter and Ted Scardino. Spengler then killed himself.

Nguyen only faces a maximum of four years in state prison, which is not nearly enough.
