Gunman opens fire inside LAPD police station lobby, 2 injured

A Los Angeles police officer was shot seven times but still managed to return fire when a gunman burst into the front lobby of the the Wilshire/West Traffic Division police station and opened fire Monday night.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said the shooter came inside, started talking to a male and female officer, and then started shooting, according to KTLA. Beck said the male officer was shot three times in the vest and four times in the extremities. The two officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

The wounded police officer is expected to survive.  He was sitting up as medics brought him to an ambulance.

The suspect was in critical condition last night.

This is the same police station that was the scene of another shooting attack on police officers last June, when a gunman ambushed two detectives outside the station.
