Pair of Arlington Police Joint Operations Take Three Suspected Heroin Dealers Off the Streets

County, Federal Partnerships Remove Danger from the Community

Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan is pleased to announce that two police operations have resulted in the arrest of three suspected heroin dealers.

“Heroin is one of the greatest evils plaguing our community and the region. It is dangerous and deadly, and it damages families and neighborhoods,” Chief Ryan said. “I am proud of the hard fought, undercover work and teamwork between Arlington Police and our partners in law enforcement. Three dangerous felons are in custody today. Let this be a lesson to anyone who wants to peddle deadly drugs in our community.”

In the most recent operation, Arlington Police worked in cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Office of United States Attorney Carmen Ortiz, the Suburban Middlesex County Drug Task Force, the Essex County Sheriff’s Department and the Boston, Ipswich, Somerville, and Malden Police Departments in the arrest of a career drug offender who has been convicted four times in the past for drug distribution, according to Ortiz’s office.

Yrvens Bain, 40, formerly of Henderson Street in Arlington was arrested on Tuesday, April 1 in the City of Malden by Arlington and Task Force police officers as part of an investigation into two suspected heroin overdose deaths in Arlington.

Bain was arrested after selling heroin on two occasions to cooperating witnesses in Waltham and Malden. He has been charged with distributing heroin. He faces 20 years in federal prison, followed by a maximum of lifetime supervised release and a fine of $1 million.

Chief Ryan extends his sincere appreciation to the law enforcement partners, including U.S. Attorney Ortiz and DEA Special Agent in Charge John J. Arvanitis, who helped bring this career offender to justice once again.

In a previous operation that concluded in February, two Boston men were arrested after they sold heroin to undercover police officers on multiple occasions. Mariano Andujar-Perez, 30,and Louis D. Pena, 20, both of Dorchester were arrested on February 14, 2014 at the intersection of Broadway and Adams St in Arlington shortly after an undercover drug buy by Arlington Police Officers.

Both men were arraigned on February 18, 2014 in Cambridge District Court. Andujar-Perez was charged with Possession Class A Drug with Intent to Distribute, Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws, and Furnishing a False Name or Social Security Number Following Arrest. Pena was charged with Possession of a Class A Drug with intent to Distribute, and Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws. Police seized a 2005 Acura as evidence, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Andujar-Perez.

Arlington Police conducted the first operation with the Suburban Middlesex County Drug Task Force, which is a partnership among several municipal police departments tasked with interdicting the drug trade and bringing drug dealers and suppliers to justice.
