WHITMAN — The Whitman Fire Department is pleased to announce that Chief Timothy Clancy graduated from the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program.
Chief Clancy graduated from the program last month in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Chief Clancy was one of 36 fire service leaders from across the country to participate in the program.
The Executive Fire Officer Program is a multiyear curriculum that teaches fire service and emergency management leaders how to implement policy solutions regarding the safety and resilience of communities and about leadership skills.
Students were tasked with creating a final capstone project, where they identified a problem and applied the concepts learned throughout the program to determine a solution.
Chief Clancy’s capstone “A Qualitative Review of the Mental Health of the Fire Departments and Evaluating the Current Mental Health Programs in Plymouth County Massachusetts,” discussed how Plymouth County Massachusetts has no set standard for evaluating its personnel’s mental health.
The research observed what resources are available to address the mental health and well-being of firefighters in Plymouth County.
The research was conducted through a series of in-person interviews that provided the data to complete the study. The purpose was to develop a pathway to help better understand the mental health issues currently facing the fire service in Plymouth County and to establish a path for members to seek help through the development of standard operating procedures of guidelines.
“This program has provided me with an opportunity to speak on and further evaluate the mental health resources available to our first responders in Plymouth County Massachusetts,” said Chief Clancy. “Throughout the program, I was able to form connections with 36 fire professionals across the country. Through this process, we have become friends and mentors and developed relationships that will last a lifetime.”
Chief Clancy began his career as a call firefighter in Whitman in 1991 before his promotion to full-time work in the department in 1997. From there, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2008. In 2021, he was promoted to Chief.
