NARRAGANSETT — Chief Sean Corrigan would like to inform community members that the Narragansett Police Department will be conducting its annual active shooter training next week.
The training will take place Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 7-9. It is expected to begin at 9 a.m. and last until about 3 p.m. each day.
The training will take place at the Pier School on South Pier Road. Residents and motorists in the area will notice a large police presence at the building and can expect to hear loud noises throughout the duration of the training.
Community members should know that this is a standard training exercise and that there is no danger or cause for concern.
The exercise will take place exclusively on the Pier School property and there will be no disruption to traffic in the surrounding area.
The training will be closed to the public and the media.
As the Narragansett Police Department trains to respond to an active shooter incident, police would also like to share with residents guidance on how to react to an active shooter or other threat by a violent attacker.
The FBI offers resources on the “Run, Hide, Fight” principles to help people learn how they can save their own lives and the lives of others before law enforcement arrives during an incident with a violent attacker.
- Run: This option begins with being aware of your environment prior to any active, hostile act occurring, including alternate exits and escape routes. Go quickly and cautiously, leaving your belongings behind and not stopping until you are in a safe location. Follow all instructions from law enforcement.
- Hide: If there is no safe escape route, find a hiding place out of the attacker’s view. Find ways to prevent the attacker from having access to you and others around you by locking the door and barricading your hiding place.
- Fight: As a last resort, people can work together to fight back using available objects to attempt to incapacitate an attacker.
