WHITMAN – Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department extinguished a bathroom fire inside an apartment on Washington Street Monday afternoon.
At 12:44 p.m. on Monday, May 22, the Whitman Fire Department received a report of a fire at a multi-family apartment located at 863 Washington St.
An off-dutyWhitman firefighter was driving by the residence when he discovered a fire in the bathroom of a first-floor apartment. The off-duty firefighter began to extinguish the flames and was able to prevent the spread of the fire until additional on-duty units responded.
First arriving companies, under the command of Lt. Bryan Smith, were able to quickly extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the apartment and other units.
During the incident, the Abington Fire Department and Whitman Police also responded to the scene.
Abington Police responded to the scene and provided interpretation services. Whitman police officer Kevin Harrington also responded with community resource dog Nola to provide comfort to the displaced residents until they were able to safely return to their apartment.
The damage was isolated to the area of origin and the property damage is estimated to be approximately $30,000. The apartment and building remained habitable and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire was investigated by the Whitman Fire Department and determined to be accidental.
