Newport Police Arrest Man in Connection to Multiple Attempted Robberies

NEWPORT — Chief Travis Bingham reports that the Newport Police Department has arrested a man in connection to several attempted robberies.

WILLIAM SLINGERLAND, AGE 28, of NEWPORT, was arrested and charged with:

  • Attempted Burglary (3 counts)
  • Unlawful Mischief
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Possession of Burglary Tools

On Tuesday, July 19, at about 5:17 a.m., Newport Police received information that an individual was planning to rob a convenience store on Coventry Street.

Officers responding to the store located the suspect, later identified as SLINGERLAND, who ran toward a residential neighborhood. Newport Police, with the assistance of K-9 Ozzy and the U.S. Border Patrol, located SLINGERLAND under the porch of a home nearby. SLINGERLAND resisted efforts to handcuff him.

SLINGERLAND was discovered to possess drug paraphernalia and a knife.

A subsequent investigation determined that SLINGERLAND had attempted to break into another business, and had entered the U.S. Postal Service office nearby without permission.

Bail was set at $1,000 and SLINGERLAND is being held at the Northern State Correctional Facility.

SLINGERLAND is scheduled to be arraigned in Orleans Criminal Court on Tuesday afternoon.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
