Bedford Police Remind Residents to Secure Vehicles, Belongings Following Numerous Motor Vehicle Break-ins
BEDFORD – Chief John Bryfonski and the Bedford Police Department are reminding residents to secure their vehicles and belongings as part of the “Remove It, Lock It or Lose It” campaign, after they responded to numerous reports of motor vehicle break-ins last year.
According to Bedford Police, thefts from motor vehicles were up by 75 percent when compared to 2014. The vast majority of thefts from motor vehicles occurred late at night and involved vehicles that were unlocked. Bedford Police believe 98 percent of all thefts from motor vehicles could have been prevented if residents had locked their cars.
In order to prevent thefts from motor vehicles, Bedford Police urge citizens to always lock their vehicles, even if it is in your driveway, and to never leave their belongings, especially those of value, in the car or in plain view. If the items need to be in the vehicle, secure them in the trunk, locked and out of sight.
Bedford Police have an increased presence throughout the community, but advise community members to be proactive in protecting their belongings.
“We are strongly urging residents to always lock their vehicles even if it is sitting in the driveway or garage,” Chief Bryfonski said. “Thieves will not hesitate to walk right up to a car and steal your belongings, so please take the necessary precautions to ensure you are not a victim of crime. The best way to stop this type of crime is to simply lock your car or secure it in your locked garage.”
If the public sees anything out of the ordinary or finds that any of their belongings have been stolen from their vehicle, they are encouraged to call the Bedford Police Department at 603-472-5113.
