Boxborough Police Department Promotes Warren O’Brien to Lieutenant

BOXBOROUGH – Chief Warren Ryder is pleased to report that he promoted Warren O’Brien to lieutenant and second in command of the Boxborough Police Department.

O’Brien was inducted into the position during a ceremony on June 29 and officially stepped into his new role on July 1.

“Lt. O’Brien is extremely deserving of this promotion,” Chief Ryder said. “Over the years he has exemplified what it means to be a committed officer serving Boxborough residents and keeping our community safe. I know he will excel in this position.”

As lieutenant, O’Brien will act as the department head if Chief Ryder is ever away, while managing supervisors and officers in the field. He is responsible for planning, scheduling and coordinating the activities of the police department.

O’Brien also serves as the Department Accreditation Manager, as the Boxborough Police Department is currently working toward recognition from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, Inc.

He started at the Boxborough Police Department in 2000 and was promoted to sergeant in 2010. O’Brien began his law enforcement career as an auxiliary police officer in his hometown of Quincy in 1981.

Since being promoted to sergeant five years ago, much of his training has been related to police supervision and management. He is well versed in leadership communications, grant writing, intelligence commander’s training, resource management, high risk domestic violence training for police commanders, internal affairs, supervisor liability, accountability and discipline, leadership principles and the FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Leadership Association’s, supervisor, command and executive institutes.

“I am excited to take the next step in my law enforcement career and to further serve the Boxborough community,” Lt. O’Brien said. “I look forward to working more closely with Chief Ryder and the men and women of our department.”
