Beverly Regional Airport Completes Runway Rehabilitation on Accelerated Timeline

BEVERLY — Airport Manager Gloria Bouillon is pleased to announce that Beverly Regional Airport completed its runway rehabilitation project yesterday on an accelerated timeline, saving the organization more than $300,000 in otherwise lost revenue.

The rehabilitation project maintains the runway’s current 100 foot width and 5,001 foot length, while updating it to satisfy safety design requirements and pavement maintenance. The $1.46 million project was funded by a $1.3 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), $73,245 grant from MassDOT, and $73,245 from the airport’s operating budget.

Initially scheduled to take approximately 45 days, the airport had planned to close in phases for approximately a month and a half while the rehabilitation was completed, and anticipated significant losses in revenue with impacts to businesses and tenants on site.

The timeline for the project was reduced to 72 hours, however, after the construction company that was awarded the bid for the project earlier this year, Brox Construction, demonstrated best safety practices and quality control to the FAA. Airport Solutions Group, the airport’s contract airport engineering firm, also facilitated the project this week.

“This project maintained the exact size of the runway, which was critical for the airport to continue working with the aircraft we service today,” Bouillon said. “As a result of the project, our runway underwent much needed maintenance and was brought up to safety design standards. We’re thrilled we were able to complete this project so quickly, and I’d like to thank everyone who was involved in making this possible, in particular Brox Construction and Airport Solutions Group.”

The rehabilitation began on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m., and was completed less than 72 hours later, at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Brox Construction more than doubled the number of personnel working on the project to meet the 72 hour timeline, and some worked overnight on Sunday.

Businesses on site were permitted to continue their operations during the project, but no aircraft were allowed to take off or land during the rehabilitation work.
