STONEHAM – Excellence in the Stoneham Police Department takes many forms.

It can be seen through a successful response to a crime or incident, positive interactions with community members, and professionalism during a high-stress situation.

The Department recognized officers and civilian staff for their service and dedication during a private awards ceremony held Jan. 30.

Officer of the Year: Detective Christopher Copan

On April 14, 2025, Detective Copan was on duty at Woburn District Court when a Yarmouth man entered the building wearing a gas mask and deployed tear gas at officers and court personnel. Detective Copan acted without hesitation and assisted in detaining the suspect.

“His composure, courage, and professionalism helped bring a volatile situation under control and ensured the safety of those present,” Chief O’Connor said. “Those actions reflect the same reliability, judgment, and dedication he demonstrates every day, and they are a clear example of why he was selected as our Officer of the Year.”

Officer of the Year is not awarded for a single incident, but for steady commitment to the highest standards of policing and dedication to community.

Detective Copan, as the Department prosecutor, is counted upon for professionalism, preparation, and sound judgment every day. He has forged strong, positive relationships with judges, court officers, clerks, and prosecutors. He is widely respected and consistently counted upon for his reliability, accuracy, and integrity.

“Detective Copan is consistently present at our community events, not because he has to be, but because he believes in building relationships and being visible and approachable,” Chief O’Connor said. “His willingness to engage with residents and represent the department in a positive, professional manner strengthens trust and reflects the values we strive to uphold as a department.”

Detective Copan’s professionalism and dedication have been recognized several times in the past year: the Town of Stoneham’s Sapphire Award, the Massachusetts Police Association Meritorious Service Medal, and a Department Commendation, distinctions stemming from his response during the Woburn Court.

Civilian Employee of the Year: Erin Sinclair

Sinclair, the department’s office manager, was recognized for exceptional dedication, service, professionalism, and commitment in the essential role in supporting the department’s daily operations.

“Her unwavering work ethic, positive attitude, and selfless approach to service make her exceptionally deserving of this recognition,” Chief O’Connor said. “Whether the need involves resolving a complex issue, locating a critical answer, coordinating resources, or preventing an obstacle before it becomes a problem, Erin is the first person everyone turns to. Her institutional knowledge, sound judgment, and calm demeanor allow her to manage competing priorities with exceptional skill.”

Sinclair also embraces the community policing mission, representing the Department with pride and integrity to build trust in the community.

“Erin cares deeply about the people she serves, often going above and beyond to support officers and staff both professionally and personally. She is a constant source of encouragement and stability, and her presence makes our department stronger,” Chief O’Connor said.

“Quite simply, much of what we accomplish as a department would not be possible without Erin,” he said.

Unsung Hero Award: Jeremy Cefalo

Cefalo is being recognized for his work and dedication as a public safety telecommunicator, playing an essential role between those in need and first responders.

“Jeremy often handles high-call volumes, fast-moving situations, and high-stress incidents with professionalism and focus,” Chief O’Connor said. “When situations are unfolding quickly and information is coming in from multiple directions, he remains composed and organized, providing clear and dependable communication to officers in the field.

Cefalo is also a valued team member, remaining positive and professional in the workplace while approaching each shift with professionalism and a willingness to learn.

“Our officers have confidence in Jeremy’s abilities. During busy or challenging moments on the radio, his steady presence helps maintain order and supports officers as situations develop. That confidence is built through experience, preparation, and a consistent commitment to doing the job well,” Chief O’Connor said. “What truly defines this year’s Unsung Hero is consistency. Shift after shift, he shows up prepared, dependable, and ready to take on whatever comes across the radio.”

Commendations

Officers were recognized with Department Commendations for their coordinated and diligent response to an armed bank robbery on Feb. 19, 2025, at the Citizens Bank located inside the Stop & Shop at 259 Main St.

Through the immediate efforts of Detective Sgt. Christopher Dalis, Sgt. Stephen Aprile, Detective Sean O’Grady and Officer Antonio Ventresca the suspect was taken into custody within three hours of the incident.

The department also recognized the critical support provided by Dispatch Supervisor David Luciano, Dispatcher Jeremy Cefalo and Detective David Ryan, whose information and communication throughout the incident was invaluable.

Acknowledgments went out to the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force, whose collaboration was crucial in resolving the case. Investigators later determined the suspect had a criminal history, including previous bank robberies.

In another commendation, Officer Stephen Chatelle was recognized for his actions during a traffic stop on Oct. 21, 2025. During the stop, Officer Chatelle identified an active warrant, and through adherence to departmental procedures, recovered a loaded, unregistered Ruger LCP firearm and ammunition from the vehicle.

Officer Chatelle’s actions directly contributed to removing an illegal weapon from the community. Sgt. Newell, Detective Ryan and Officer Strong were also recognized for their assistance and coordination that led to the successful outcome.

Dispatch Supervisor David Luciano received a commendation for overseeing the year-long renovation of the Stoneham Police Department’s dispatch center. Luciano managed all phases of the renovation, from budgeting and planning to the temporary relocation of the dispatch center. The project was completed on time and within the department’s budget, resulting in a modernized communications center that will serve the department and the community for years to come.

“These awards recognize more than individual achievements; they recognize the professionalism, teamwork and dedication that define the Stoneham Police Department,” said Chief James O’Connor. “We are proud to honor the men and women who take the extra step every day to serve the Stoneham community.”

Chief O’Connor would like to recognize the families and loved ones of the honorees, whose support and sacrifices at home make this level of community service possible.
