Maynard Fire Announces Five New AEDs Officially Installed in Town, Thanks to Local Girl Scout

MAYNARD —Being ready in an emergency can be scary, especially without the proper life-saving tools available. The first minute someone is experiencing a cardiac event is the most crucial.

Thanks to local Girl Scout Siena Hesbach, in collaboration with the Maynard Fire Department, the Town is now equipped with the appropriate life-saving tools, five new Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) that are accessible to the public.

The AEDs were officially debuted during Maynard Fest on Saturday, Oct. 4. During the community event, Siena held a variety of CPR and AED demonstrations with the assistance of Chief Angela Lawless and representatives of ZOLL, the AED manufacturer, which provided the devices to the town.

The AEDs were installed in five locations that are easily accessible to the public, allowing community members to render aid to someone who is experiencing a cardiac event before the arrival of first responders. The locations are:

  • Memorial Park (Nason Street side)
  • Fowler School (soccer fields)
  • Maynard High School Alumni Field (near the track)
  • Rockland Avenue Soccer Fields
  • Ice House Landing (on the bike path next to the kayak rentals)

Siena worked to get the AEDs to the town through her Gold Award project. The Gold Award is the highest honor earned by a senior or ambassador Girl Scout, and the award candidate must present and carry out a project. Candidates must identify an issue they feel strongly about and that has a lasting impact on the community.

Being a student-athlete at Maynard High School and seeing the lack of equipment around town through various sports, Siena knew she needed to make a change.

Siena worked with the Maynard Fire Department for over a year throughout the project, collecting donations with the assistance of sponsors and prioritizing community safety, one AED at a time.

“Siena’s dedication to this project is truly inspiring. Her leadership and commitment to community safety have given our residents the tools they need to save lives,” said Chief Lawless. “Every second counts in a cardiac emergency, and thanks to Siena’s hard work, our community is now better prepared to respond before first responders arrive. The Maynard Fire Department was proud to partner with her on this important initiative.”
