CANTON — Town Administrator Charles Doody, Fire Chief Wendell Robery, and Building Commissioner Edward Walsh report that the Canton Fire and Building Departments are proactively reaching out to residential care facilities in town to reinforce critical fire safety protocols following a tragic fire at an assisted living facility in Fall River.
In a letter sent to all local residential care facilities, the Canton Fire and Building Departments are urging administrators to review fire protection systems, evacuation plans, and building safety measures to ensure compliance with state codes and regulations.
“As firefighters and public servants, our top priority is the safety of our community’s most vulnerable residents,” said Fire Chief Robery. “This outreach is meant to reinforce our shared responsibility in maintaining safe facilities and preventing tragedy before it can occur.”
The letter includes a checklist of key life safety areas that all facilities should review immediately, including:
- Regular inspection and maintenance of fire protection systems, including sprinklers, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, and alarm devices.
- Ensuring fire doors, smoke doors, and exit doors are functioning correctly and unobstructed.
- Verifying that emergency evacuation plans are clearly posted and regularly reviewed with all staff.
- Confirming proper maintenance and cleaning of kitchen hood systems and dryer vents.
- Keeping stairwells and corridors clear of storage and trip hazards.
The guidance aligns with Massachusetts fire and building codes, including 527 CMR and 780 CMR.
Canton Fire Deputy Chief Andy Morgan and Commissioner Walsh are available to assist facilities with any questions related to compliance or safety measures.
“This effort is about education, prevention, and being proactive,” said Commissioner Walsh. “We’re here to support these facilities in every way possible to keep their residents and staff safe.”
Facilities in need of assistance or clarification are encouraged to contact Deputy Chief Morgan at 781-575-6654 or Commissioner Walsh at 781-821-5003.
