Hanson and Whitman Police Departments Respond to Social Media Threat Against Whitman-Hanson Regional High School

HANSON — Hanson Police Chief Michael Miksch, Whitman Police Chief Timothy Hanlon and Superintendent Jeffrey Szymaniak report that the Hanson and Whitman Police Departments responded Monday to a social media threat that was made against Whitman-Hanson Regional High School (WHRHS).

On Monday, April 7, at approximately 1 p.m., the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) notified Hanson Police about a non-specific threat made on social media that could be perceived as a safety threat to WHRHS. Hanson Police immediately informed the school district, and an investigation was launched.

Out of an abundance of caution, WHRHS was immediately placed in a Stay Put Order to allow for the investigation.

In accordance with established policies and procedures, police from both towns and school administrators worked together to identify the student who allegedly posted the threat. Police identified and interviewed the student and quickly determined there was no threat to students or staff. The student will face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the District’s student code of conduct.

The Stay Put Order was lifted at about 1:25 p.m. This incident remains under investigation by the Hanson Police Department.

The Hanson and Whitman Police Departments and Whitman-Hanson Regional School District urge all families to remind students about the dangers of misusing social media and the serious consequences it can bring.

“Students need to be mindful when using social media that platforms are monitored, and their words can be taken out of context and cause alarm,” Superintendent Szymaniak said. “I am thankful for the partnership between the federal and local agencies and the willingness to share information. The safety of our students and staff is the priority, and I am grateful for the collaboration the District shares with local law enforcement.”
