TYNGSBOROUGH — Chief Richard Howe reports that a Tyngsborough Police Officer helped a senior citizen evacuate from a fire in senior housing on Frost Road on Thursday afternoon, and then extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher.

On Thursday, Sept. 5, at approximately 12:43 p.m., the Tyngsborough Police and Fire Departments were called to a senior housing complex at 186 Frost Road for a report of a possible structure fire.

Tyngsborough Police Officer Evan Donnelly was first to arrive at the scene, and found a grease fire in the kitchen of an apartment in the complex.

Officer Donnelly helped an 82-year-old resident get out of the smoke-filled apartment, and then returned with a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. Officer Donnelly also helped other residents of the complex to evacuate since hallways were filled with smoke.

The Tyngsborough Fire Department then arrived and ensured the fire was completely out and that it had not extended. Firefighters ventilated the building afterward. Firefighters from Dracut and Dunstable provided mutual aid.

The resident of the home suffered minor smoke inhalation, but declined to be transported to a hospital. The resident was unable to return to his apartment after the fire, but he is staying with family members.

“This is another example of what police officers do every day, risking their own safety for the welfare of others,” said Chief Howe. “I’m proud of Officer Donnelly for his actions today, as I am all police officers who wear the badge with honor and do not hesitate when seconds count and people are depending on us. I’d also like to thank the Tyngsborough, Dracut and Dunstable fire departments for their quick responses.”

Officer Donnelly is a 10-year veteran of the department.
