Massachusetts is experiencing an unusual string of hot weather days, including a heat advisory for nine counties and a heat emergency declared in Boston through Wednesday. The Raynham Fire Department urges residents to take immediate precautions to stay safe during extreme heat.
Heat Safety Tips:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid beverages with caffeine or alcohol as they can lead to dehydration.
- Stay Indoors: Stay in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible. If you do not have air conditioning at home, consider spending time in public places like shopping malls, libraries, or designated cooling centers.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing. A hat and sunglasses can also help protect you from the sun.
- Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors.
- Check on Vulnerable Neighbors: Ensure that older neighbors, young children, and those with medical conditions stay cool and hydrated.
- Never Leave Children or Pets in Cars. Even with the windows cracked, cars can heat up to dangerous temperatures quickly. Always check the back seat before locking your car.
Pet Safety:
- Keep Pets Indoors: Ensure pets can access cool indoor spaces and plenty of water.
- Limit Exercise: Walk pets in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Avoid hot pavement, which can burn their paws.
- Watch for Signs of Heatstroke: Symptoms in pets include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, and confusion. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cooler area and contact your veterinarian immediately.
Chief Bryan LaCivita reminds everyone, “With the current heat advisory and heat emergency, extreme heat can be hazardous. Please take these tips seriously to ensure your safety and well-being, as well as that of yourself, your family, and your neighbors.”
