Whitman Fire Department Responds to Hazardous Materials Incident in Home

WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department responded to a potential hazardous materials incident on Friday evening.

WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department responded to a potential hazardous materials incident on Friday evening.

On Friday, July 12, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Whitman Fire responded to 103 Brigham St. for a report of a noxious odor in a home.

The occupants reported returning home after about four hours to find an odor they believed to be acetone. They said they did not feel sick or have symptoms of any kind. Their two dogs were in the house and appeared normal.

Units did not notice anything suspicious upon arrival. The house was metered with a four-gas meter with zero readings found.

Out of an abundance of caution, Whitman Fire declared a Tier 1 hazmat situation, the lowest level on a scale of five. The Tier 1 hazmat declaration led the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services District 1 Hazmat Response Team to respond as well.

Hazmat technicians inspected the residence and found no indications of dangerous levels of hazardous materials with a meter. Upon further investigation, technicians found a ruptured spray paint can in the basement, which was removed.

The house was ventilated with positive pressure until the odor was removed. The occupants were allowed to return home at 12:30 a.m. All Fire Department and Hazmat personnel cleared the scene without any injury or signs of illness.
