WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy is pleased to announce that Whitman Firefighter Jacob Smith graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy (MFA) on Friday, June 28.
Firefighter Smith was among 19 graduates representing nine fire departments who attended the Academy’s Career Recruit Firefighter Training Program Class #BW30. The graduates completed the 50-day Career Recruit Firefighting Training Program at the Bridgewater campus.
“On behalf of the Whitman Fire Department, I want to congratulate Firefighter Smith on this important achievment and career milestone,” said Chief Clancy. “The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy provides firefighters with the critical instruction and experience they need to begin their careers as front-line first responders.”
The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy is overseen by the state Department of Fire Services and state Fire Marshal Jon DaVine.
“Massachusetts Firefighting Academy instructors draw on decades of experience in the fire service to train new recruits,” said Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Director Eric Littmann. “Through consistent classroom instruction and practical exercises, today’s graduates have developed the tools they’ll need to work seamlessly with veteran firefighters in their home departments and in neighboring
communities as mutual aid.”
The program teaches the essentials of fire and non-fire conditions, life safety, search and rescue, ladder operations, water supply, pump operation and fire attack. The graduates are now certified at the level of Firefighter I and II and in hazardous material operation.
The other 18 graduates of Class #BW30 represent the fire departments of Avon, Brewster, Bridgewater, Canton, Eastham, Hanson, Hull, Hyannis, Plymouth, Provincetown, Randolph, Scituate, Seekonk, Walpole and Yarmouth.
About The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy:
At the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, firefighter recruits learn a wide range of skills in an intensive 10-week program. Certified and more experienced firefighters lead classroom instruction, physical fitness training, firefighter skills training and firefighting practice. Students are given training in public fire education, hazardous material incident mitigation, flammable liquids, stress management, confined space rescue techniques and rappelling. Upon successful completion of the Recruit Program, all students have met national standards of National Fire Protection Association 1001.
