DRACUT — Deputy Chief Thomas Mackey reports that the Dracut Fire Department battled a house fire at a home on Arlington Street on Friday.
On Friday, June 7, at approximately 10 a.m., the Dracut Fire Department responded to 470 Arlington St., for a report of building fire.
Deputy Mackey was first on scene and found light smoke showing from the front of a single-family, split entry home. When Deputy Mackey investigated further, he found heavy smoke in the home’s basement.
The first arriving engine stretched a hose line into the home’s basement and found heavy fire in a closet. Companies were able to quickly knock that fire down and prevent fire damage from extending out of the basement.
A teenage boy was home at the time with two younger siblings. The teenager smelled smoke, realized there was a fire, assisted his younger siblings out of the home, closed the front door and then called 911.
“He did one heck of a job,” said Deputy Mackey. “He had the presence of mind to get out of the house with his younger siblings as soon as he realized there was a fire. He stayed calm and even closed the front door, which likely saved much of the house from worse fire damage.”
There were no reported injuries. The three children and their two parents will be temporarily displaced, but they reported having a place to stay while fire damages are repaired.
Firefighters from Pelham, N.H., provided mutual aid at the scene of the fire, and firefighters from Lowell and Tyngsborough covered Dracut stations.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Dracut Fire and Police Fire Investigation Unit.
