WESTBOROUGH — Chief Patrick Purcell reports that the Westborough Fire Department rescued two residents from a two-alarm fire on South Street.

On Sunday, June 2, at approximately 1:55 a.m., the Westborough Fire Department was called to 22-26 South St., for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from the rear of the building with two people trapped on the building’s roof while trying to escape the fire.

Firefighters rescued the two residents over ground ladders and then made an aggressive attack on the fire, which was brought under control by about 2:40 a.m.

There were no reported injuries. The structure suffered about $1 million in damage to apartments upstairs and a restaurant below.

Firefighters from Southborough, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Grafton, Upton, and Framingham provided mutual aid at the scene, while firefighters from Hopedale covered Westborough stations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Westborough Fire Department and the District 14 Fire Investigation Unit.
