STOW — Fire Chief John Paul Benoit reports that the Stow Fire Department responded after a resident brought a WWII-era unexploded hand grenade to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services offices in town.
On Friday, March 22, at 2:18 p.m., Stow Police and Fire received a call reporting that a Concord resident walked into the lobby of the building and reported that they had found an unexploded hand grenade and that it was in the trunk of their vehicle.
First responders arrived quickly, and the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad responded to the scene immediately to establish a safe area so the grenade could be examined.
After closer examination and investigation, the grenade, a World War II area Mk. 2 “Pineapple” fragmentation grenade was determined to be inert and likely a sample used in training exercises. It was quickly determined that there was no danger.
“I would like to remind all residents to call 911 immediately if you find something suspicious or that resembles any kind of military ordinance,” Chief Benoit said. “Do not attempt to move or handle any potential explosive. Leave the area and let first responders handle the situation professionally.”
