Newbury Fire Responds to Hazmat Incident at Whiston-Bragdon Arena

NEWBURY — The Newbury Fire Department responded to a hazmat incident at Whiston-Bragdon Arena at Governor’s Academy last night.

On Tuesday, March 31, at about 9:14 p.m., Newbury Fire was notified via alert system of a potential hazmat incident at Whiston-Bragdon Arena.

Crews arrived at the arena, which was unoccupied, and observed an unfamiliar odor present. Meters detected a displacement of oxygen, but could not identify any other gases.

The Newbury Fire Department initiated a Tier 1 Hazmat response to bring a State Department of Fire Services District Hazmat Team to the area.

The District Hazmat Team used their meters, which read for a greater number of gases than the standard-issue Department meters, and did not detect anything alarming.

As a precaution, crews closed and secured the building.

The Newbury Fire Department returned to the scene Wednesday morning and met with Governor’s Academy staff to do a walkthrough of the building. No hazardous gases were detected, and all systems were operating normally.

Mutual aid on scene was provided by the Fire Departments of Rowley, Georgetown and Newburyport. West Newbury, Groveland, Amesbury and Salisbury Fire provided station coverage.
