Maynard Police Department Receives a $70,011 State Grant to Purchase and Deploy Body-Worn Cameras

MAYNARD — The Maynard Police Department will deploy body-worn cameras on all sworn officers later this year thanks to a $70,011 grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The Law Enforcement Body-Worn Camera Program was established in 2022, and has distributed nearly $13 million statewide to support body-worn camera programs via the Office of Grants and Research. Maynard Police received a grant in the latest round of funding, which provided $3.49 million for body-worn cameras statewide.

“Body-worn cameras help establish clear, consistent standards for policing across Massachusetts,” said Gov. Maura Healey. “This investment supports professionalism and accountability statewide and helps police departments build trust with their communities.”

Maynard Police are now in the process of selecting appropriate cameras and working with police unions to establish policies and procedures surrounding the cameras. Chief Christopher Troiano hopes to have the cameras deployed by July.

Wearing body cameras demonstrates departments’ commitment to transparency and accountability and helps improve policing practices so that officers may better serve their communities.

Research done by the Bureau of Justice Assistance suggests that implementing body-worn cameras has led to reductions in crime, police-generated incidents, assaults against police officers, and complaints against police officers in certain communities.

“The Maynard Police Department believes in building trust with out community, and we believe that equipping officers with body-worn cameras will further our goal of being transparent with our community,” said Chief Troiano. “I want to thank the Select Board and Town Administrator Greg Johnson for their support of this initiative, and Deputy Chief Michael Sutherland for his work on obtaining this important grant.”
