Newburyport Police Release Results of Community Survey on Safety and Police Performance

The Newburyport Police Department is pleased to share the results of a community survey that revealed more than 90 percent of respondents feel very safe in their community during the day.

NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport Police Department is pleased to share the results of a community survey that revealed more than 90 percent of respondents feel very safe in their community during the day.

The survey conducted last fall was answered by 253 respondents, who gave the department a rating of 8.1 out of 10 points.

Approximately 92 percent of respondents who have dealt directly with Newburyport Police since January 2025 reported being either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with police performance. Approximately 83 percent of respondents said they have confidence in the city’s emergency response capabilities.

More than 90 percent of respondents said they feel very safe in the community during the daylight hours, though that percentage dropped to approximately 69 percent when respondents were asked if they feel very safe walking in Newburyport at night.

Respondents expressed that their top concerns in Newburyport are underage substance abuse, school safety, mental health issues, internet crimes and scams, and impaired driving.

When asked for suggestions on what would make Newburyport safer, respondents suggested increased traffic enforcement, better communication and transparency, and more proactive policing and high-visibility patrols.

“The overwhelmingly positive results of the survey are a direct testament to the work done by our officers and professional staff on a daily basis,” said Marshal Simons.  “Our department will continue our commitment to listen, communicate, and build relationships within our community. I’m appreciative to those that took the time to provide feedback through this survey.”
