Stoneham Fire Dept. Extinguishes Fire at Former Arnold House

STONEHAM — Chief Matthew Grafton reports that the Stoneham Fire Department responded to and extinguished a fire at a sober living home Monday evening.

Stoneham Firefighters responded at 6:52 p.m. to the MacDonald House, located at 490 Williams St. for a report of a fire. Upon arrival, the first fire units on scene reported that an outside fire was starting to spread to the basement of the building, a large 2 1/2 story wood-frame dwelling.

Firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly, preventing significant damage to the structure. Firefighters remained at the scene for over an hour, attacking hot spots. Approximately 24 residents were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The Stoneham Building Inspector and Stoneham DPW were notified and responded to the scene. The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the Stoneham Police and Fire Departments.

The MacDonald House is sober housing for men. It is located at the former Arnold House Nursing Home.
