ROCKPORT — Rockport Police Officer Gregory George has served his community both on- and off-duty for more than 25 years.
On Thursday night, he was promoted to Sergeant and recognized for his work within the community.
Sgt. George joined the Rockport Police Department in 1998, serving as a patrol officer for more than two decades. Time and again he demonstrated courage, respect, compassion and professionalism as he mentored and trained younger officers, all while doing his daily duties.
“What sets Sgt. George apart is not just his professional competence, but his genuine care for both the community we serve and the officers he works alongside,” said Chief John Horvath. “He has been instrumental in training new recruits, while sharing the knowledge and experience gained over more than two decades of service. His guidance has shaped countless officers and, by extension, strengthened our entire department.”
Sgt. George received his promotion in a ceremony on Thursday evening.
Terry George, his wife, pinned his new badge.
The ceremony wasn’t quite over, though. Sgt. George also was presented with the Rockport Police Department’s Roger G. Lesch Community Service Award, which recognizes those who provide extraordinary service to the Rockport community.
Lesch served multiple roles in the Rockport community for more than 40 years, including police officer. The award is reserved for those employees who, like Lesch, demonstrate exceptional commitment to their community beyond the call of duty — individuals who serve others in their personal time, without compensation, and who embody the highest ideals of public service.
“Whether mentoring young people, supporting local charitable organizations, participating in community events, or lending a helping hand to neighbors in need, Sgt. George has shown that the commitment to protect and serve is not confined to working hours,” said Chief Horvath.
Sgt. George’s promotion was effective on Wednesday, Oct. 1. He will now serve as a supervisor on the 4 p.m. to midnight shift, and will also continue to provide Field Training to new officers.
“I am honored by both this promotion and award and look forward to serving the town and its citizens in my new role as a supervisor,” said Sgt. Geroge. “To be chosen for the Roger G. Lesch award is the highest honor, because the man for whom it was named truly embodies what community service is all about.”
