STOUGHTON — Chief Donna McNamara reports that the Stoughton Police Department arrested a Canton man who fled from police following an attempted traffic stop and later crashed into another vehicle.

HELOHIM FRANCILME, AGE 20, of CANTON, was arrested and charged with:

  • Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Leaving the Scene of Property Damage (Two Counts)
  • Failure to Stop for Police (Two Counts)
  • Uninsured Motor Vehicle
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Revoked Registration
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
  • Speeding
  • Marked Lanes Violation

On Friday, Aug. 29, at approximately 6:08 p.m., Officer Khalil Paul was on patrol in the area of West and Central streets when he observed a black Jeep Grand Cherokee known to police due to previous interactions.

Officer Paul attempted to conduct a traffic stop due to a revoked registration, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed toward Pearl Street. He stopped pursuing the vehicle as it entered Canton.

Sgt. Paul Williams, who was also familiar with the vehicle and the areas it frequents, decided to check Island Street in the event that the car traveled back into Stoughton. A short time later, Sgt. Williams observed the same vehicle driving negligently on Bailey Street in Canton, near the town line. He did not pursue the vehicle but maintained a distance to observe the car.

The vehicle then crashed into another car, and shortly after, crashed into a utility pole. The driver ran from the scene.

With assistance from Canton Police and a Massachusetts State Police K-9 unit, the driver, identified as FRANCILME, was located about an hour later by Canton Police on Greenwood Road.

Additional charges may be filed following the investigation.

The driver of the car that the Jeep struck refused medical treatment.

FRANCILME was arraigned Tuesday in Stoughton District Court. His bail was set at $2,500.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
