DARTMOUTH — Chief Brian P. Levesque reports that the Dartmouth Police Department is actively investigating a house explosion that occurred overnight, resulting in one resident being seriously injured.

On Tuesday, Sept. 2, at approximately 12:57 a.m., Dartmouth Police and Dartmouth Fire District 1 received multiple 911 calls reporting an explosion at a home at 20 Sagamore Drive. Police, fire, and emergency medical personnel immediately responded.

Upon arrival, crews reported heavy fire conditions and explosions from the garage of the house.

Two engines and one ladder company from Dartmouth Fire District 1 responded, along with engine companies from Dartmouth Fire Districts 2 and 3.

All residents evacuated from the home before first responders arrived. One resident who suffered burns was transported to a Rhode Island hospital with injuries that are believed to be serious, but non-life-threatening.

Three dogs were inside the home at the time of the explosion. One dog was later determined to be deceased at the scene, another was taken to a veterinarian for emergency treatment, and the third was located Tuesday morning uninjured after initially going missing.

State Police Bomb Squad technicians responded to assess the scene for any hazards that could have contributed to the explosion. The investigation is ongoing.

The origin and cause of the explosion remain under investigation by the Dartmouth Police Department, Dartmouth Fire District 1, and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Further inquiries should be directed to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
