NEWPORT, Vt. — Chief Travis Bingham reports that the Newport Police Department responded Wednesday to a Scottsdale Road home and talked a potentially armed domestic assault suspect into surrendering peacefully.
DERICK McINTOSH, 38, of NEWPORT, was arrested and charged with:
- Criminal Threatening
- Aggravated Domestic Assault
- Aggravated Assault with a Weapon
- Reckless Endangerment
- Attempted Sexual Assault
- Armed while Committing a Felony
On Wednesday, Aug. 6, at approximately noon, the Newport Police Department received a report of an assault with a firearm that occurred on Orchard Street.
A subsequent investigation determined McINTOSH pointed a firearm at both himself and at an individual known to him as a result of a domestic relationship. He then fled the scene in a motor vehicle.
Newport Police and law enforcement partners responded to McINTOSH’s home and set up a perimeter. Officers, assisted by a family member, then talked McINTOSH into surrendering peacefully. McINTOSH was taken into custody at his home.
The Orleans County Sheriff’s Department and the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles provided assistance at the scene.
McINTOSH is being held without bail. He will be arraigned Thursday in Orleans District Court.
