ACTON — Chief Anita Arnum is pleased to share that Acton Fire held a pinning ceremony on Wednesday, July 23, which welcomed four new Firefighter/EMTs to the Department and celebrated the implementation of Acton’s first Fire Prevention Officer in about 50 years.
The pinning ceremony is a long-standing tradition in fire services, symbolizing a firefighter’s commitment to serve with honor, integrity and accountability as they transition into a new role.
Four of the Fire Department’s newest members were formally pinned during the ceremony:
- Firefighter/EMT Paul McBrearty Jr. was pinned by his sons, Keagan and Danny McBrearty, and his daughter, Kadence McBrearty.
- Firefighter/EMT Connor Caveney was pinned by his wife and daughter, Danielle and Layla Caveney.
- Firefighter/EMT Stephen Flanagan was pinned by his wife, Sydney Flanagan.
- Firefighter/EMT Cameron Lee was pinned by Deputy Fire Chief Christopher Sammet.
In addition to the new members, the pinning ceremony also honored newly appointed Fire Prevention Officer Jeffrey Dalton. As Fire Prevention Officer, Dalton will play a vital role in reducing risk before emergencies happen by conducting fire and life safety inspections, reviewing building and site plans, enforcing fire codes, leading public education and community risk reduction efforts.
The introduction of this position marks a major milestone for Acton Fire, as there has not been a dedicated Fire Prevention Officer in the Department since the mid-1970s. The reintroduction of this position is a reflection of the Department’s commitment to enhancing fire and life safety in Acton.
Dalton was formally pinned at the ceremony by his father, John Dalton.
“Today, we welcome new members to our fire service family — individuals who have chosen to serve others during their most vulnerable moments,” said Chief Arnum during her address at the ceremony. “Becoming a firefighter or EMT isn’t just about the skills learned in training or the hours spent studying — it’s about stepping into a profession built on trust, teamwork, sacrifice and courage. We’re proud of what they’ve already accomplished and even more excited for what lies ahead.”
