Lt. Scott Sencabaugh Selected as Wilmington’s Next Deputy Police Chief 

WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department is pleased to share that Town Manager Eric Slagle has selected Lt. Scott Sencabaugh as the next Deputy Chief of Police. Lt. Sencabaugh will begin his new duties on Sept. 5.

His appointment comes as Chief Joseph Desmond prepares to retire, with Deputy Chief Brian Pupa set to succeed him as Chief.

Lt. Sencabaugh joined Wilmington Police in 1996 as an officer, and in 2002 was promoted to Patrol Sergeant and Training Officer. In 2008, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant.

From 2006-2017, he served as an Executive Officer of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council’s (NEMLEC) School Threat Assessment & Response System (STARS).

Throughout his time with the Department, Lt. Sencabaugh has demonstrated a deep commitment to professional development. For 18 years, he served as the Department’s Training Director, identifying training gaps and professional development opportunities, and creating robust safety protocols and emergency response plans that brought together many facets of the community to maximize safety preparedness. 

He has additionally completed a long list of professional development courses in several areas, including leadership and management, incident command and emergency management, first responder health and wellness, medical and emergency response training, active shooter and tactical response, investigations and more. 

Lt. Sencabaugh holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Salem State College and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Western New England College.
