AVON — The Avon Fire Department extinguished an electrical fire in the basement of a home on Victory Avenue on Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, July 16, at approximately 9 p.m., Avon Fire responded to 1 Victory Ave. for a report of a fire in a downstairs room.

The first-arriving engine company saw heavy black smoke emanating from the single-family, one-and-a-half-story home.

A working fire assignment was struck, bringing in additional resources from the Stoughton, Randolph, and Holbrook Fire Departments and Brewster Ambulance. Brockton Fire also provided coverage for the town during the incident.

The home was occupied at the time the fire broke out, but all residents had evacuated before firefighters’ arrival, with assistance from Avon Police, who moved the occupants safely away from the building.

As a result of an aggressive attack by firefighters, the fire was contained to the floor of origin — the lower walkout finished basement — with smoke damage throughout the upper floor.

The Red Cross of Massachusetts provided temporary housing to the displaced occupants.

The Massachusetts State Police Fire Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office assisted at the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature, originating in a basement bedroom.

The Avon Fire Department reminds residents to ensure that all power strips and extension cords are in good working condition, are appropriately rated for the devices they’re powering, and that all electrical work complies with the Massachusetts Electrical Code.

“Having working smoke alarms throughout your residence is essential for early warning of a fire so that you have sufficient time to exit your home in an emergency,” said Assistant Chief Cronin. “Thankfully, with the help of our mutual aid partners, our crews did an excellent job locating the source of the fire and quickly extinguishing it to prevent further damage to the home.”

Residents are encouraged to contact the Avon Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Office at 774-480-1692 with any questions about home fire safety.
