Town of Canton Provides Daily Updates on Trash and Recycling Collection Contingency Plan

CANTON — Trash and recycling collection services are progressing slowly in the Town of Canton following a labor dispute between Republic Services and the company’s labor union. Trucks are facing additional delays from striking workers and replacement drivers’ unfamiliarity with Canton’s routes and collection schedule.

Despite Republic Services resumption of curbside trash and recycling collection on Monday, July 7, routes are not being completed on their usual day and, in fact, are taking multiple days to complete.

The Town of Canton will issue daily updates on the situation via press release, the Town of Canton’s website and social media posts.

  • Republic Services has informed the Town that Tuesday collection is 55% completed. Crews will continue to collect the Tuesday route on Friday July 11. The Town has requested that Republic increase the number of trucks being assigned to Canton. There are currently 3 trucks working in Canton daily. Residents who are on a Tuesday schedule should leave their containers at the curbside.
  • Republic Services has informed the Town that residents who normally have trash pickup on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will not be collected Friday, July 11, and containers do not need to be placed curbside.
  • An update on today’s progress will be provided at 5 p.m. A town-wide call will be sent out at 6 p.m. with future collection schedules. The Town will be sending out a nightly “robo-call” to advise residents when to take their trash/recycle totes to the curbside.
  • Residents are asked to not put containers curbside until notified by the Town that their pickup day will commence.
  • Please check the Town of Canton Website and Facebook page for daily updates.
  • Sign up for alerts by scrolling to the “Popular Links” area and select the button labeled “Notify Me/Alert Sign Up.”
  • The Town encourages people to utilize the Pine Street Transfer Site at 99 Pine St. Hours and days of operation at the transfer site have been expanded. Residents can drop off trash between 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday; and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for disposal of bagged trash and cardboard. Recyclables are not accepted at this time, other than cardboard. Department of Public Works (DPW) staff will be on site to assist residents in removing trash from vehicles to be placed in dumpsters.

The Town of Canton appreciates the continued patience and understanding of its residents during this disruption. The Town will continue to provide timely updates as more information becomes available.
