Republic Services Implements Contingency Plan and Resumes Trash and Recycling Collection in Canton

CANTON — Trash and recycling collection services have resumed in the Town of Canton following a work stoppage by Republic Services initiated by the company’s labor union.

Republic Services resumed curbside trash and recycling collection on Monday, July 7. Replacement drivers have been enlisted, but are unfamiliar with the Town of Canton, so some routes may not be completed on their usual day.

Trucks are also facing additional delays from striking workers.

In the meantime, residents should place trash and recycling containers curbside on their regularly scheduled day, and if not emptied, leave them at the curbside for pick up on the following day.

Replacement workers will also be collecting additional bags left outside of the containers to help alleviate the overflow.

The Town of Canton will issue daily updates on the situation via press release, the Town of Canton’s website and social media posts.

  • Republic has three trucks operating in Town today, Wednesday, July 9, and they are still working on Tuesday’s schedule. If your scheduled pick-up day is Tuesday, please leave your trash and recycle at the curbside until it is emptied. This may take several days because drivers are unfamiliar with the routes, and the striking workers are slowing their progress. Pick up will be delayed.
  • If you were scheduled for Monday pick-up this week and your trash was not picked up, it will not be picked up until next week. You can take the totes back in from the curbside and we will notify you when to put it back out, utilizing a “robo-call,” Facebook post and website update.
  • We will be sending out a nightly “robo-call” to advise residents when to take their trash/recycle totes to the curbside.
  • Please check the Town of Canton Website and Facebook page for daily updates.
  • Sign up for alerts by scrolling to the “Popular Links” area and select the button labeled “Notify Me/Alert Sign Up.”
  • The Town has added additional overflow trash containers at the Pine Street Transfer Station, 99 Pine St., and residents can drop off trash between 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Recyclables are not accepted, other than cardboard.

The Town of Canton appreciates the continued patience and understanding of its residents during this disruption. The Town will continue to provide timely updates as more information becomes available.
