BOURNE — Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou and the Bourne Public Schools are proud to share that school employee John Kelsch was recognized at a Bourne School Committee meeting on Sept. 11 for his heroic act.

Kelsch, a custodian at Bourne Middle School, was doing yard work at home on the evening of Sept. 8 when he witnessed a van crash into the side of a home and catch fire.

The van hit the roof of the home and the driver was stuck in the burning vehicle several feet above ground.

Kelsch ran to the car, climbed up a tree, opened the door to the van and attempted to get the driver out before falling out of the tree. Firefighters later transported the driver to a nearby hospital.

“In a moment of crisis, Mr. Kelsch reacted immediately to help free this driver from his burning vehicle, risking his safety to save another,” Superintendent Quinlan-Zhou said. “We are incredibly proud and grateful to have Mr. Kelsch in our BPS community. Mr. Kelsch, thank you for your bravery and for being a shining example of a true hero.”
