LUNENBURG – Chief Thomas Gammel announces that the Lunenburg Police Department, in collaboration with the Lunenburg Fire Department, will be hosting advanced active-shooter response training this week.
Training will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 13, and Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lunenburg Middle-High School campus.
The Active Attack Integrated Response Course (AAIR), crafted by Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT), is designed to improve integration among law enforcement, fire, tele-communicators, and EMS in active attack/shooter events.
Residents should be aware that there will be increased public safety and law enforcement presence in the area near the school during training. Police will be using department radios to simulate real-life scenarios during training. Community members who may follow scanners are asked to remain calm as this is part of the exercise.
Training is coordinated by John Mazza and Scott Cluet through the Municipal Police Training Council’s Active Shooter/Hostile Event Response (ASHER) program. Lunenburg Police and Fire, as well as members of the Groton and Fitchburg Police Departments, will participate.
“This training will provide our public safety team with the most-up-to-date practices. We hope we never have to address an active shooter situation, but it’s critical that we all have the skills to respond effectively to protect our community,” Chief Gammel said.
(Media members are invited to attend active shooter scenario training sessions on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 10:30 a.m. or 12:45 p.m. Please RSVP to tom@jgpr.net no later than 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13.)
