DUNSTABLE — Chief William Farrell reminds Dunstable residents to be careful while grilling after the Dunstable Fire Department responded to a fire Thursday night on Hall Street.
Crews responded Thursday night to a residence on Hall Street after a small fire originating from a propane gas grill extended to the home. The fire was quickly extinguished.
Mutual aid was provided by firefighters from Pepperell and Tyngsborough.
Chief Farrell would like to use this opportunity to remind residents of the following:
- When using a grill, keep it at least 10 feet away from any part of the structure.
- To follow up on the last tip, no type of grill should be used on a porch, balcony or fire escape.
- Keep children away from grills, matches, lighters and lighter fluid.
The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services offers some more tips:
- Never leave a burning grill unattended.
- Make sure that the lid of a gas grill is open when you light it. Propane can build up inside and when ignited, the lid may blow off.
- Always keep propane outdoors.
- Clean the grease trap every time you grill.
- Replace propane cylinders that are old, rusty or showing any other signs of disrepair.
Chief Farrell thanks residents for heeding these pieces of advice when using their grills.
