WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department extinguished a dryer fire at a laundromat last night.
On Monday, June 17 at 7:18 p.m. the Whitman Fire Department received a call for a reported dryer fire at Larry’s Launderette, located at 261 Washington St.
Whitman Car 3, Ladder 246 and Engine 243 responded to the scene.
All occupants evacuated the building prior to the arrival of firefighters. No injuries were reported.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed light smoke coming from the front door of the building and were told by staff about a fire in one of the dryers, which a bystander had used a fire extinguisher on.
Crews located the dryer and were able to pry open the control board panel, which had heat and smoke emanating from it. Firefighters discharged a second fire extinguisher and the heat and smoke dissipated.
Crews checked for fire extension above and behind the dryer and found no spread of the flames.
The scene was cleared approximately an hour later.
The Whitman Board of Health, as well as National Grid and the electrical inspector, were notified. The business has since re-opened.
The cause of the fire was investigated by the Whitman Fire Department, and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office. The investigation determined that the cause of the fire was unintentional/accidental.
