WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department extinguished a house fire on Broad Street over the weekend that left three residents displaced.
On Saturday, May 18, at 11:55 a.m., Whitman Fire received a 911 call for a report of a fire at a two-family home located at 71 Broad St.
Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from an exterior wall of the house. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the flames and prevented the fire from spreading further.
Three residents had evacuated prior to firefighters’ arrival. Due to extensive fire, water and smoke damage the house was deemed uninhabitable and the residents were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. No injuries were reported.
Mutual aid was provided by the East Bridgewater and Hanson Fire Departments and the Abington Fire Department provided station coverage.
The cause of the fire was investigated by the Whitman Fire Department, the Whitman Police Department and the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office. tThe investigation determined that the cause of the fire was due to improper disposal of smoking materials.
