Chief Patrick Purcell is pleased to announce that two Westborough firefighters graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s 50-day Career Recruit Firefighting Training Program.
Firefighters Stephen Walsh and Darab Fadavi, who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and resilience, were among the 34 graduates from 20 departments who successfully completed the academy’s Training Program Class 319 on Friday, March 29.
“We welcome Firefighters Walsh and Fadavi to our ranks today,” said Chief Purcell. “We are excited to have them aboard and look forward to watching their careers grow within the Westborough Fire Department.”
Firefighters always have to be ready to tackle a variety of emergencies with skill and courage. From responding to environmental dangers like gas leaks and chemical spills to rescuing individuals in peril—whether it’s a child who has broken through the ice, someone stuck in an elevator, or a driver in a wrecked car—they’re the first on the scene. Their expertise extends to rigorous testing and upkeep of critical equipment, including breathing devices, hydrants, hoses, and power tools, ensuring they’re always prepared to save lives.
At the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy, our newest graduates have completed a rigorous 10-week course that comprehensively covers all aspects of modern firefighting. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, they have gained in-depth knowledge of fire science, effective suppression tactics, and crucial skills such as public fire education, handling hazardous materials, and stress management. The program, which includes classroom learning, physical fitness, hands-on skill development, and live firefighting exercises, has prepared them to be highly effective and resilient firefighters.
